Ghost Mannequin vs Flat Lay: Which Is Right for Your Clothing Brand?

Ghost mannequin or flat lay? A plain-English guide to the two most popular eCommerce clothing photography styles — how they differ, what each costs, and which to choose.

If you sell clothing online, two photography styles will come up again and again: ghost mannequin and flat lay. Both produce clean, professional product images — but they sell garments in different ways, and the right choice depends on your products, your brand look and your budget. Here's how to decide.

What is ghost mannequin photography?

Ghost mannequin (or "invisible mannequin") photography shows a garment on a mannequin, then removes the mannequin in post-production and composites the inside of the neckline and cuffs back in. The result is a hollow, three-dimensional garment that holds its natural, worn shape on a clean white background — without a visible mannequin or model. It's the format most fashion retailers use because it shows fit and structure clearly.

What is flat lay photography?

Flat lay styles a garment flat — folded or arranged as a complete look — and photographs it from directly overhead. It's a crisp, modern, editorial style that's quick to produce at volume and works beautifully for social, lookbooks and product pages. It tends to feel more "styled" and contemporary than ghost mannequin.

The key differences

  • Shape vs styling: Ghost mannequin shows true 3D fit; flat lay shows the garment styled flat with a cleaner, editorial feel.
  • Best products: Ghost mannequin shines for structured pieces — jackets, shirts, dresses, knitwear. Flat lay is great for tees, softer items, kidswear and full outfit sets.
  • Consistency at scale: Both are highly repeatable, but flat lay is often the faster option for very large catalogues.
  • Look and feel: Ghost mannequin reads as classic eCommerce; flat lay reads as modern and brand-led.

Which should you choose?

For most clothing brands the honest answer is: use both, strategically. Lead your product pages with ghost mannequin so customers can judge fit, and use flat lay for social, campaigns and softer items where styling matters more than structure. If you only pick one, choose ghost mannequin for fit-critical apparel and flat lay for relaxed, contemporary ranges.

The good news is you don't have to decide alone — both can be shot in a single session, and we'll recommend the right mix for your range.

What they cost

At GQ Studios both styles start from £12+VAT per product (£15 front & back, £17 front, back & detail), with all steaming, retouching and resizing included. Prices are for orders of 20+ items; a £3+VAT per item surcharge applies under 20 items. See ghost mannequin and flat lay for examples.
